If it has anything to do with video chat, I can usually find David Geller, CEO of Eyejot, one of the first to give it a try. Today was no exception. And since he was one of my first Facebook friends to show up on SocialEyes and be live (Nicole, you were not available.), I did a quick screencast of our attempt to add a third party, Hector Diaz, to our conversation. As you’ll see in the video, we didn’t do very well.

Lesson for today? Don’t judge too soon.

What Is More Dangerous Than Texting While Driving?

I answered that pressing question today with the new Skype for iPhone update.

Yesterday I updated with great anticipation, hoping that the quality of the new video chat capabilities on the Skype app would live up to the quality of video I’ve experienced with Apple’s Facetime. To my delight, on a WiFi connection, Skype rocked.

Video chat over 3G is the difference.

What I was even happier to find, however, is that on a decent 3g connection, the experience was just as good. I video Skyped with Steve Zehngut in the parking lot of LA Fitness and with Dan Green right before I got on the treadmill. No question… Skype for iPhone trumps FaceTime video chat with ease. If you’re a Skype user, this is a no brainer.

Obviously, bandwidth will be an issue with any video service. So, I wanted to see how Skype behaved with a single bar. So, I dialed up Jay Thompson while at a stop light. The result? I got a pretty decent video, but the audio was horrid. Then the light changed.

What’s more dangerous than texting while driving? Skype video chatting while driving.

Removing Filters – A Wetoku Interview With Hal Lublin

It’s no secret that I’m easily distracted. So, what I’m about to say won’t come as a surprise to anyone who knows me. This morning, while trying to catch up on email after my trip to Blogworld Expo in Las Vegas, a shiny object diverted my attention. This is usually a new piece of tech, but in this case it was a blog post. Hal Lublin wrote “I’m All In,” a post about some advice Chris Brogan gave him while playing in an Ante Up For Africa poker tournament that took place as part of the Blogworld activities.

Removing The Filters From My Online Conversations

In his post, Hal articulated something I had communicated with my wife over the weekend, that I need to remove a few of my “filters” when I’m online. While I’m certain that I am authentic in my online communication, I’m equally certain that I’m a toned-down version of my authentic self. There’s certainly nothing wrong with that, and yet I left Blogworld wondering if removing a few of my self-imposed regulators might not be a good idea. Quite frankly, that thought scared my wife. She is warning me that I need to keep a few of them. And I certainly will.

Hal’s post resonated with me. So this afternoon I gave myself permission to be distracted by another shiny object and do a quick test of Wetoku to highlight his post. Wetoku occupied the booth across from the Mothers Fighting For Others table in the Expo hall and I was looking for a good excuse to give it a test. This qualified.
